Leada Wood's Mixed Media Workshop

Saturday, May 21st was big fun at Studio Twenty! I had a mixed media workshop with artists from Sweetwater, Dallas and Budapest Hungary. This cute couple is from Humgary and are adorable! They were here visiting her mom so they all came to the workshop. Everyone worked so hard and  had two really fabulous paintings going.  They teased me that they were going to make me stay until 10 pm so they could finish their paintings! Paper Geisha

We had such fun at Studio Twenty today with Suzy Pal and a great group of ladies. We ripped and tore paper from magazines and glued all day! I stayed after class and finished my geisha because I could not wait to see her finished! Now I am waiting on all the others to see how theirs turn out...it is very exciting to see them take shape. Using only paper, no paint, we used the papers to add value, texture, shape and color. What fun! and it might be addictive! Ok Kay get busy and get yours done...I'm waiting to see it!

This is another little gem I created for the 5X7 Art SPLURGE at the Arthouse at the Jones Center in Austin, Texas, opening May 12th. This little critter was living in my flower bed between the iris and hydrangeas...alas he is no more.  I collaged a copy of a Texas map onto matt board, applied 1/2 gesso and 1/2 water to veil the map a little then painted with watercolors and used a wash of ink on my little critter. This one also has the Austin area of the map.

This was a fun little painting, only 5X7, a watercolor on top of a section of Texas map. I copied the map, collaged it onto a piece of matt board then  put a layer of  1/2 gesso, 1/2 water over the map, drew my little longhorn onto the map and painted with watercolors. I made sure Austin was showing as this little gem is going to Austin for the 5X7 ART SPLURGE at the Arthouse. The show opens May 12th.

This is my Monday paintiing...it also has texture stamped around the paper and then left to dry. We chose a non-representational photo and painted the shapes and colors in. I think we used only two colors plus black and white. I painted everything in very quickly EXCEPT for the little rectangle on the right...it took until Friday to get it like it needed to be! I enjoyed the Asian feel and colors of this piece, a very abstract landscape.

This is another Walton Experience. I put random texure down with different objects all over the paper and let it dry. We then chose three colors and placed them on wet paper and let that dry. We then had to paint negatively around our What with a dark rich color to make our What (focal Point) stand out. I left some of my underpainting textures travel around the painting and then tucked and found more shapes and textures until I was tuckered out and called it finished!

Well hooray! I finally have internet after nearly three weeks! So I thought I would share my painting from the Walton Experience. This one was taken from a photograph that was non representational. I put texture on the paper first and let it dry and then in 20 minutes I laid down a lot of paint so much that Douglas came by and grabbed my spray water bottle and put down about a 1/4 inch of water on top of the paint and told me to leave it alone while he did his demo. When I came back wonderful magic had happened! This is the end result. I guess sometimes I spend way too much time on a painting and work it to death. I enjoyed the workshop so much! It was a wonderful bunch of women and a fantastic time painting! The week passed too quickly as usual but I learned so much in that short time. Douglas is a wonderful instructor and we are so lucky to have him come to Big Spring every year.
