I love hibiscus! Their constant blooming, bringing you flowers every day...what's not to love! It is not summer time at my house without pots full of hibiscus. This is not a watercolor but I decided to post it anyway as it bright and cheerful and we need some color in Texas! This is a 24x36 acrylic on canvas.

This is a continuation of experimental watercolor technique. I again drew circles and lines and used a cool transparent palette for the underpainting, changing value or color when I came to a line. When the underpainting was finished I defined the shape of the flower and put in the shadows. This exercise is good to sharpen your understanding of value.

Warm Transparent Watercolor Exercise

 This is an experimental exercise. I first drew circles and lines then I used only three colors, red, yellow, and blue transparent watercolor. Every time I came to a line I changed up the color or value...or at least I tried to! After I painted the underpainting I began defining the shape of the hibiscus. It is a fun little exercise and gives a totally different look to a traditional flower painting.
