Hollyhock: "Black Tie"

30x22 watercolor on Kilimanjaro 140 lb cold press paper with Daniel Smith paints.  I grew several black hollyhocks outside my studio door but no blooms this year thanks to the drought.  In my photo the bloom is more dark blood red, but with this one I've gone to the dark side and have pushed color, exaggerating where necessary.

30x22 watercolor on Arches 140 lb cold press done a few years ago and sold to my friend Debie Pirkle. Just last week I reframed this for her in deep dark browns and it is quite stunning on her wall!

White Pansies & Bunny - Happy New Year!

11x15 watercolor from a photo taken last spring, a cute windowbox scene where I set up many of my garden still life in anticipation of painting them later.  This is for the white challenge on Art Colony blog and WetCanvas! Happy New Year to all of you from the new year bunny! I hope it rings in good cheer and luck for you.  Keep painting!

Bloomsday Pansies Collage

16x20 collage on canvas begun yesterday in Susie's workshop and finished up today after 4-5 more hours...I swear these can go on forever, but TOTAL FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This composition is based on my watercan and pansies drawing painted in watercolor a few months ago.

Garden Party

15x22 watercolor of different varieties of geraniums in various sized clay pots. I've SOLD this one but wanted to post it in case you've not seen it from last spring...time to paint more geraniums and to plant some, too!

Bloomsday

15x22 on Italia Acquerello 140 lb cold press paper, AJ, DS, DV paints. It is my entry for this month's art association challenge of watering cans. Drawn from my antique metal can and fresh pansies, it is a scene for Spring!

Dragonfly with Poppies

13.5 x 16.25 mixed media on matboard (latex acrylic, watercolor, spray webbing black and silver for wings, ink). I coated the mat with matte medium and gesso, let dry, then spritzed cobalt blue watercolor plus moss green latex acrylic. I let it dry then drew the insect outline, developed its wings with both colors spray webbing, and blocked out poppy shapes, stems, and leaves in pencil. After painting the plants while still wet, I lifted out color with a facial tissue and a paper towel for an antiqued botanical look.
