MOON FLOWERS BY LEADA WOOD, CONTEMPORARY TEXAS ARTIST

MOON FLOWERS BY LEADA WOOD©
www.leadawood.com     www.leadawood.com/blog

This one has been a long time in the finishing stage...thought it was done and then did a lot more to it and finally I think it is done!

My mom and grandmother always had moon flowers, ever since I can remember. They only bloom at night and sometimes when it is a cloudy morning they stay in bloom. I don't know why I have never planted them, maybe it is because I know they are poisonous and there are too many little flower pickers around our place. I think I may consider planting them at a distance where the flower pickers or llamas can't get to them. I am ready for spring!

This painting is 22x28 transparent watercolor and is available.

I was lulled into thinking Spring was here but today's cold front proved different. I retreated into the studio and painted this sunny rendition of a sunflower to brighten my day. I hope it brightens yours as well! This transparent watercolor is 8x10 on Arches paper.

Cozy Kitty by Leada Wood©

Cozy Kitty by Leada Wood ©

This cute kitty lives down the road from Studio Twenty at Lattie's Mexican Imports. This chiminera sets on her counter with Tootles laying, waiting for Lattie to wiggle his feather toy at the top. Then he springs into action and it is Play Time! This painting has been in process for a while as I have been side tracked with torn paper collage paintings, but I finally got er done!

Springtime in Texas by Leada Wood

Springtime in Texas by Leada Wood ©
When we were out treking looking at wildflowers in the hill country we came across a beautiful longhorn just laying in the sunshine enjoying life. I had to snap a few photos, of course, and now I have gotten around to painting this Texas treasure. This painting is 14x28 on Arches paper using transparent watercolor.

Experimental Chilies

Experimental Chilies by Leada Wood

I used frisket film and cut out shapes and placed on my paper and then painted a light wash of transparent watercolor over the shapes. When the underpainting was dry I drew my chili pepper on and then painted with local color, transparently so that some of the underpainting would show through. When that was dry I put in my shadows to complete the painting.

Grey Transparent Watercolor Technique

Grey Transparent Watercolor Technique by Leada Wood

I am still exploring the mystery of this hibiscus! I started the same as in the other two demos, drawing lines and circles. This time I used only transparent compliments to make various shades of grey, again changing color or value as I came to a line. I defined the shape of the flower and put in the darks and then popped in bright color here and there for interest.  I have enjoyed playing around with this flower and will probably do more experimental watercolor...stay tuned!

Cool Transparent Watercolor Technique

Cool Transparent Watercolor Technique by Leada Wood
This is a continuation of experimental watercolor technique. I again drew circles and lines and used a cool transparent palette for the underpainting, changing value or color when I came to a line. When the underpainting was finished I defined the shape of the flower and put in the shadows. This exercise is good to sharpen your understanding of value.

Warm Transparent Watercolor Technique

Warm Transparent Watercolor Exercise
This is an experimental exercise. I first drew circles and lines then I used only three colors, red, yellow, and blue transparent watercolor. Every time I came to a line I changed up the color or value...or at least I tried to! After I painted the underpainting I began defining the shape of the hibiscus. It is a fun little exercise and gives a totally different look to a traditional flower painting.
